The Burton Cummings Community Centre is one of the most vibrant community
centres in Winnipeg. It’s located at 960 Arlington Street in the West End.
As a community centre, it has a colourful history. The original name of the
centre was West End Memorial Community Centre. It was established just after
the Second World War (1947). The property and original log house (which still
stands on the property to this day) was donated to the City of Winnipeg for
the community centre by a wealthy Winnipeg family.
The original West End Memorial Community Centre had a rich legacy of sports
and community events. It supported many hockey teams and players over the
years. However by the late 1980s, the old centre was falling apart, so a
neighbourhood group chaired by Derek Dabee assisted the city to rebuild the
bigger multipurpose centre in 1990. Funding for the construction of the
building were provided by all three levels of government.
With the new building came the task of establishing a new name for the club.
During the 1960’s many of Winnipeg’s rock’n roll legends performed at the
centre. The most famous and frequent of these were the Guess Who. The lead
singer of that band was of course the equally famous Burton Cummings.
This gives a big hint to where the new name for the centre came from!
On July 1st, 1991 (Canada Day), the centre was officially renamed Burton
Cummings Community Centre. On that day Burton Cummings was present and
performed at a free outdoor concert at the centre. The following year
he donated a large photograph of himself wearing the Winnipeg Jets jersey.
Also in 1991 the hockey team sported their new jersey with the “Rockman” logo.
Since the opening of the new centre BCCC has been recognized for it’s many
successful programs in sports including hockey, basketball, soccer, baseball,
cricket, tennis, as well as recreation, seniors, youth and culture programs.
